How can I save on disk space?

The “disk space usage” functionality in control panel is a handy way to help determine which files are taking up much space.  Tracking down where the problem is can be hard because your total usage includes databases, log files, emails and the files associated with your website. However, to see how much disk space you have used, simply log into your cPanel and you should be able to view your disk space usage on the left side along with other statistics relating to your account. In order to free up space, you can do the following:

1. Remove unwanted email

Login to your email account using web-mail by typing on your browser www.yourdomain.com/webmail.

Choose read mail using roundcube and click on it, this will open the interface. At the bottom of the screen, click the "Select All" icon or individually select the email messages you want to delete. Then at the top of the screen click the "Move message to trash" icon. This process may take some time, depending on the number of messages in the Inbox.

Remember if you have not beforehand set roundcube to "Clear Trash on logout" (under Settings > Server Settings) you will need to navigate to the trash folder to finish deleting the emails.

  1. Click on the "Trash" folder on the left side of the screen.
  2. Click the Select all icon at the bottom of the screen
  3. Click the "Delete" icon to completely delete the messages (note there is no warning that messages will be deleted).

     2. Set email quota limits

Most of the time the email directory is the problem. To find out which accounts are using the most disk space. Click the “Email accounts icon” which is under mail section.” Here all the email accounts will be displayed showing disk usage on each email account. We recommend setting the maximum size quota of each mailbox if it is possible and this will save you from storing many emails on the server and inadvertently going over your limit.

3. Optimize images used on your website

Check website design images or media files, capacity size an  image is supposed to take and if  for example the image is more than 1MB,consider  optimizing the image for web preferably jpeg image  format however if concerned about  resolution quality, optimized png image format would do. Check colors in graphics, banners, advertisements, flyers and look at the possibility of reducing the number of colors.

4. Clear out unused files and databases

Reviewing of all the content because some might be unnecessary or the content becomes outdated. Polishing off the content write-up on the website is essential. Use the File Manager in CPanel to delete unused files/folders. Use an FTP application to manage/remove files.

      5. Download any backups created through the cPanel.

Log in to the Cpanel, files section click file manager icon, look for public_html folder which contain all the files, folders and zipped backup copy which should be downloaded and make sure to delete it once done. Disable any scheduled backups.
